Why establishing a skincare regimen from day one is key!

Jun 7, 2017
Establishing skincare habits from a young age is crucial for sustaining healthy, glowing skin. Our skin is the body’s largest organ and reflects how we treat it.

For many young men and women, proper skin care is often overlooked as they base their skin care needs on their age.  They assume because they are young, their skin will adapt to harsh environments or conditions they expose it to, or that they can get away with doing nothing at all to care for their skin. The signs of skin mistreatment may not reflect on your face immediately, but it will catch up to you eventually, leaving your skin in poor condition.

Establishing a thorough skincare routine will help your skin thrive all year long and maintain its suppleness over the years. Here are my top three skincare habits you should start early:

Cleanse

This may seem like a basic step, however the way you are cleansing your skin may not be as effective as you think.

Firstly you need to establish what type of skin you have.  You may have oily, dry or sensitive skin and can require specific care to best treat your skin. It’s important to get a cleaner that removes grease and dirt whilst still having a hydrating component. This will ensure your skin is properly cleansed, whilst staying hydrated.

When washing your face make sure to use lukewarm water as this helps extract the dirt from your face. Avoid using very warm water as it may dry out your skin and cause it to become aggravated (I’m especially talking to those of you that cleanse in the shower under very hot water – you know who you are!).

Once you have cleansed your skin, pat dry your face with a towel or face cloth. Excessive rubbing or pressure may encourage wrinkles and can potentially irritate the skin.

Moisturise

Once you have cleansed your face, it is important to moisturise as dry skin is not only not a good luck, but can cause problems other than aesthetic ones.

30 per cent of our skin consists of water and lipids and keeping it moist can prevent it from cracking an exposing lower skin layers to dirt and infections.

Make sure to choose a suitable moisturiser for your skin type, to address any concerns you may have. Most people fall into the dry or oily combination categories and either require intense moisture or oil-free bases.

We all know the saying ‘the more the merrier’ but this does not apply when it comes to moisturiser.  Applying more moisturiser does not provide the skin with more moisture, it only gives it more product to absorb. This can lead to blocked pores and can undo your cleansing.  A good application method is to use a dollop the size of a 10 cent piece on your face to avoid skin irritation.

Treatments

Skin treatments such as facemasks are often forgotten, as they are that extra step that doesn’t seem necessary and adds more time to your routine. However, these treatments are usually created to address specific areas of skin such as pores, wrinkles, and pigmentation.

Make sure to treat your skin once a week to a facemask to purify the skin, removing any dirt or oil that may be missed when cleansing and give it a moisture boost.

Facemasks are also an excellent way to increase blood circulation in your skin, helping improve overall tone and firmness of the skin.
